Specialized Suction Dentures in Sudbury and Sturgeon Falls
What are Suction Effective Dentures? Suction Effective Dentures (Suction Effective Mandibular Complete Dentures (SEMCD)) is an improved upgrade of the BPS denture system. A BPS® denture (Biofunctional Prosthetic System) is a system of professional expertise and quality products that are the standard for aesthetics, comfort, fit and function. BPS can be defined as “a system consisting of a series of steps from impression-taking, bite registration, setup of denture teeth, polymerization and finishing to delivery that is carried out according to the clearly defined BPS procedures, using Ivoclar Vivadent’s devices and materials, with the ultimate goal of a happy patient.
It is highly recommended that the practitioner be well experienced with the BPS techniques before attempting the SEMCD system. The suction-effective dentures are an extension of the BPS system. BPS is the best system used to make an upper and lower denture, but the issue with a set of dentures is that the lower denture is very unstable.
Evolution of BPS System
BPS originated from studies by Rainer Strack of the University of Tubingen in Germany in 1955. Through various studies and in collaboration using Orthotype Ivoclar Vivadent moulds based on tooth forms sculpted by a master dental technician, Eugene Schlaich, the BPS system is supported by a solid body of scientific evidence and is composed of fabrication steps designed to reduce the number of patient visits and integrate impression-taking and bite registration into one procedure. Each step has built-in accuracy for quality assurance. All materials and devices used in each step of laboratory work are of high quality.
BPS has been incorporated into the curriculum of 23 of 49 dental schools in the United States and also in Europe. The system was distributed throughout Japan by Mr. Hans Schleich from 1985 to 1994, and Mr. Herbert Frick from 1995 to 2009. The late Dr. Hiroshi Kondo and Dr. Haruhiko Abe also introduced it as an outstanding system of denture fabrication.
Today, Ivoclar Vivadent continues to improve materials and technologies in search of a better denture fabrication system. Their commitment to in-depth research and continuous innovation is highly commendable.
The Function of BPS and Increasing Esthetic Demands
The demand for brand new dentures that are not only functional but esthetically pleasing has been growing, because of the increasing number of edentulous individuals (“active seniors”) since the year 2000, with more of these individuals desiring to enjoy life to the fullest with their own individuality and personal style.
Achieving Suction of the Mandibular Complete Denture and BPS
One of the most difficult results to achieve in clinical dentistry is the suction of the mandibular complete denture. A newly developed technique for achieving suction of the mandibular complete denture has become an indispensable part of the armamentarium available for current prosthodontic treatment. It seems that the most ideal way to achieve suction of the mandibular complete dentures is to combine the systematic BPS denture fabrication process will ensure a high success rate in attaining mandibular denture suction for this objective. It is recommended that the fundamentals of BPS be learned first before moving on to the more advanced stage of acquiring knowledge and skills of mandibular denture suction and combining it with BPS.
Goal of BPS
BPS is not only a system for complete dentures, but it also encompasses a wide range of prosthetic treatments, including removable partial dentures (to replace missing teeth), single dentures in one jaw (either maxillary or mandibular), conventional overdentures, and implant-supported overdentures.
During a prosthodontic symposium held at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, a conclusion was reached that conventional removable dentures can no longer be considered as optimal prosthodontic options. As a result, a statement was issued designating mandibular two-implant overdentures as the first choice for the standard of care for edentulous patients. The statement is known as the McGill Consensus or McGill statement.
In 2002, Mr. Delsaut attended the world (5 continents) prosthodontics symposium held at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. Since the McGill Consensus was reached in 2002, a mandibular two-implant overdenture (two IOD) has been regarded as the final goal of BPS dentures. Ivoclar Vivadent developed composite resin teeth in 2010 as a solution to pronounced occlusal wear of denture teeth caused by increased occlusal force with IOD. These initiatives have triggered a worldwide movement towards higher stability and functionality of dentures.
